Sustainable Finance for sustainable growth

Summary

India has ranked among the fastest-growing economies even amid the global slowdown and economic challenges.

For this achievement to sustain, however, growth will need to be inclusive and all-round.

In other words, sustainability will need to play a pivotal role in building a resilient and viable future for India.

The financial sector can play an important role here by mobilising financing for green, social and other sustainability-linked projects.

The Union Budget for fiscal 2024 has prioritised green growth, encouraged MSME and Start-ups as well as extended benefits for the well-being of the society at large.

Other initiatives such as the Framework for Sovereign Green Bonds released by the Government of India and the framework for acceptance of green deposits by the Reserve Bank of India will support issuers widen their pool of potential investors.

The Climate Bonds Initiative lists India as the sixth-largest issuer of green, social, sustainable, sustainability-linked, and transition bonds (GSS+) in the Asia Pacific.

That said, only a few Indian Organisations have issued sustainable finance instruments, while several others including investors and financial participants in India are yet to witness its tangible benefits.

Will Organisations be able to reap benefits of sustainable finance? What are the pre-requisites to raise sustainable finance? Will financial institutions be able to hasten the process of improving the sustainability quotient of their portfolio?
