CRISIL webinar on the electric vehicle ecosystem: The route to clean mobility

Summary

Transportation accounts for nearly a third of global pollution, and a shift to clean mobility has become an imperative for every country, amid increasing signs of climate change and environmental degradation.

To propel the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), Niti Aayog and the government - both at the central and state level - have announced numerous initiatives such as higher subsidies under FAME-II for two-wheelers, the Production-Linked Incentive schemes for advanced chemistry cell & auto and auto components sector, and other demand incentives. A battery swapping policy is also in the works.

All that opens up routes to significant opportunities for automotive component manufacturers. The opportunities are not just limited to the domestic market in India, but the global markets as well, considering the focus of MNCs on offsetting supply-chain risks stemming from geopolitical issues.

On cue, technology providers have started tapping the huge potential in this segment with investments, entrepreneurships, and start-ups.

Innovations in mobility are increasing and buzzwords such as BAAS, or ‘battery as a service’, and MAAS, or ‘mobility as a service’, are, well, buzzing.

Demand for EVs has also taken off despite the waves of the Covid-19 pandemic.

What also helps is that the two- and three-wheeler EVs have attained parity with their internal combustion engine counterparts in terms of total cost of ownership (at a usage of 6,000 kms a year).

But speed-breakers abound: in the two-wheeler EV segment, acquisition cost and financing are issues - as are lack of charging infrastructure, limited swappable battery options, relatively limited battery swapping infrastructure, and financing in the three-wheeler EV segment.

On the other hand, passenger EVs face stiff competition from compressed natural gas-driven vehicles in terms of total cost of ownership (at a usage of 8,000–12,000 kms a year).

In this milieu, CRISIL is hosting a webinar titled, 'The road to clean mobility', where its experts will share their views on:

  • The technology curve's impact on consumer decisions
  • The road taken by policy makers
  • Battery swapping as an adoption catalyst
  • Navigating the financing snarl
  • The emerging OEM demographic

This will be followed by a panel discussion with industry experts and a Q&A session.
