Summary
Objective
India’s agricultural sector is significant for more reasons than one: it supports incomes and livelihoods of half the population – or more than 65 crore people; has 16.5% share in gross value-added (GVA); shows rising prominence in trade; and accounts for a massive chunk of loans contracted.
There is also an entire ecosystem thriving around it – of the agricultural inputs segment comprising seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, farm equipment and machinery.
The sector’s prominence is also evident from the fact that agriculture-linked lending totted up to 13% of non-food credit, valued at Rs 11.7 lakh crore. Of this, ~70% were farming loans.
Segments linked to agricultural infrastructure will also evolve over the next few years, opening up opportunities in the lending space, especially after the passage of the three farm bills in Parliament last month, which promise to transform the agricultural marketing landscape.
Elsewhere, priority sector lending norms are making bankers commit ever-greater amounts to agriculture, even as risks of farming activities differ across states. State-level data on gross non-performing assets affirm how risk levels – for what have been preferred lending states so far – have changed over the past few years.
The program aims to address the emerging landscape for agriculture & the opportunities & risks for the lenders & investors.
