The last few years have been rather eventful for asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) in India. The opportunity has grown significantly, given the high level of non-performing assets in the banking sector. However, there has been a spate of regulatory changes and the number of players entering the space has shot up, too
Fiscal 2018, it is believed, will be a pivotal year for ARCs, particularly in the wake of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. As the provisioning requirement for banks' investments in security receipts increases, it will necessitate changes in the business model of ARCs, and how they adapt to the new paradigm will be critical to growth in time to come.
That said, the track record of ARCs in recovery remains limited, given that a large proportion of the cumulative acquisitions by these has happened in the last three years.
