CRISIL Ratings webinar on Banking Sector - Fiscal 2019: A year of recovery and growth

Summary

2018 has been a year of seminal changes, such as the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) game-changing norms on stress recognition and resolution, the turnaround in the steel sector providing tailwind to resolution and recovery under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), bold step by the government - for the first time - to let go of its majority shareholding in a public sector bank and also announce the merger of three other public sector banks.

The initiatives are beginning to bear fruits such as improved credit discipline, decline in the accretion of new non-performing assets (NPAs), improving credit risk profiles of corporates, better industrial production and incipient economic revival - and despite continuing stress in the power sector.

Crucially, the IBC has tilted the balance in favour of lenders, and defaulters today fear losing their companies. But huge NPAs continue to strain profitability, capital position and credit growth of public sector banks.

Given the backdrop, CRISIL believes time is opportune for a webinar on the changing dynamics of the domestic banking sector, where our experts will try to answer the following questions

  • Have the asset quality challenges been reined in by banks?
  • Will public sector banks continue to bleed and lose market share?
  • How much capital do public sector banks need to get back on rails?
  • Is consolidation the right answer to the problems faced by PSBs?
  • Can digitalisation and technology be game changers for banks?

There will be a presentation by CRISIL Ratings, followed by a panel discussion with senior stakeholders from the banking sector and a Q&A session.
