CRISIL Research SME Report 2022

  • Offers an assessment of second Covid-19 wave impact and recovery in 69 SME sectors and 147 clusters
  • Provides near-term outlook on business and financial potential in specific segments
  • Provides assessment of SME sectors that lost market share to larger players during pandemic

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) segment form an integral part of economy in terms of its contribution in GDP, employment, exports and lending.

Despite hiccups created by pandemic over the last several quarters, recovery across most SME sectors is evident in recent months. In long term, the segment will continue to offer attractive business opportunities for financiers. However, the challenge lies in spotting the sectors and clusters that are relatively less affected due to the pandemic and are likely to offer the desired risk-adjusted returns. And that entails tracking the performance and riskiness of sectors and clusters on a timely basis.

Furthermore, opportunities may emerge with rolling out of production linked investment schemes (PLI) by the government, with few sectors possessing huge potential for the SMEs.

SME Report of May 2022 deep dives into opportunities and challenges across key sectors and clusters to evaluate relative attractiveness.

Several questions arise in this milieu, including:

  • Which sectors may experience the faster revenue recovery compared to pre-pandemic and which ones are the laggard?
  • Why an auto component cluster in north India will underperform those in other states?
  • Which pockets in India are leading or lagging the recovery curve?
  • To what extent will be the cost pass-through of rising raw material prices across sectors?
  • Which sub-segment within healthcare will underperform and why?

CRISIL's SME Report of May 2022 addresses all these and more. It provides:

  • Insights and outlook on business and financial prospects across sectors and clusters
  • Industry and cluster attractiveness matrices for differentiating risk and opportunity
  • Business and financial tools for benchmarking across clusters and sectors
  • Database of around 15,000-20,000 SMEs, with key financial ratios and rating information for more than 4,500 entities
  • A six-month monitoring mechanism for SME sectors and clusters
