CRISIL Research SME Report 2023

  • Offers an assessment of level of pandemic recovery in 69 SME sectors and 147 clusters
  • Provides near-term outlook on business and financial potential in specific segments
  • Covers the impact of movement in commodity and exchange rate on margins

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) segment form an integral part of economy in terms of its contribution in GDP, employment, exports and lending.

Overall MSME revenue is expected to reach 1.36 times of the pre-pandemic (fiscal 2020) level in fiscal 2024. Margins are expected to be under pressure this fiscal but will cross pre-pandemic level in fiscal 2024. In long term, the segment will continue to offer attractive business opportunities for financiers. However, the challenge lies in spotting the sectors and clusters that have recovered fast since pandemic and are likely to offer the desired risk-adjusted returns. And that entails tracking the performance and riskiness of sectors and clusters on a timely basis.

Furthermore, assessment of working capital has been carried out to identify sectors witnessing stretch which will provide financiers with opportunity to lend.

SME Report deep dives into opportunities and challenges across key sectors and clusters to evaluate relative attractiveness.

Several questions arise in this milieu, including:

  • Which sectors may experience the faster margin recovery in fiscals 2023 and 2024 compared to pre-pandemic and which ones are the laggard?
  • Which cluster in South India will outperform that of West India in seafood?
  • Why a cluster in West India will underperform in SME Gems & Jewellery sector?
  • Which sectors are expected to witness stretch in working capital days as compared to pre-pandemic?

CRISIL's SME Report addresses all these and more. It provides:

  • Insights and outlook on business and financial prospects across sectors and clusters
